Welcome

Welcome!

Welcome to Microeconomics! I am Peter Turner, the Instructor for SS 186, Introduction to Microeconomics, and I guarantee that after successfully completing this course you will have the tools to go out into the economy and have a good understanding of why everything is so confusing. Economics is the only field where two people can share a Nobel Prize for saying the opposite things.(This actually happened.) Somebody once said that the reason God created economists was to make weather forecasters look good.

I have been teaching this course for too many years to count, and I have seen some real changes in both the focus of the discipline and the needs of the students. Withdraw from this course immediately if you think that it is going to help you make a killing on Wall Street. (On second thought, sticking with the course will at least help you understand why you did not make that killing on Wall Street.)

You have chosen to study Economics in a new and exciting format, the SUNY Learning Network. When I first heard about college classes being offered over the Internet, I scoffed at the thought. Now that I am a veteran of 100s previous on-line courses, I scoff at my initial reaction. This is a terrific format for students and instructors. Yes, there are some trade-offs (a good economic term) in this format, but there are also great opportunities- it all depends on YOU. I think we have created a good shell for the course, how successful it is will be a function of the level of participation and interest you show.

Please take the time to read all the Course Information Documents. I hope you have a good experience with Microeconomics.

What do you get when you cross the Godfather with an economist? An offer you can’t understand.
