Apatheia – A state of mind in which one is not disturbed by passions, equanimity.

Arete – For Epictetus, the skill of living in accordance with nature, of accepting the way things are.

Eudaimonia – Full human happiness according to Epictetus and Aristotle.

Eupatheiai – The feeling of well-being that comes from a life characterized by Apatheia.

Heinz Dilemma – The case study used by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg to devise his theory of the stages of moral development.

Rings of Gyges – Plato’s classic parable asking whether it is wise to be good for its own sake, not for social approval.

Virtues – For the Greeks, traits of character that if practiced can lead to true happiness.
