dealing with the real issue in dispute.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Ad misericordium<\/strong> - Inappropriate appeal to pity or emotions to hide lack of facts or argument<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">After-dinner speeches<\/strong> \u2013 humorous speeches that make a serious point.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Alliteration<\/strong> \u2013 the repetition of initial consonant sounds in a sentence or passage.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Analogical reasoning<\/strong> \u2013 drawing conclusions about an object or phenomenon based on its similarities to something else.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Anaphora<\/strong> \u2013 the succession of sentences beginning with the same word or group of words.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Anecdote<\/strong> \u2013 a brief account or story of an interesting or humorous event.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Antithesis<\/strong> \u2013 the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas in balanced or parallel words, phrases, or grammatical structures.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Appeal to Tradition<\/strong> - arguing that traditional practice and long-term history is the only reason for continuing a policy.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Appropriateness<\/strong> \u2013 how persons and groups should be referred to and addressed based on inclusiveness and context.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Argument from Silence<\/strong> \u2013 making an converse argument from lack of evidence or information about a conclusion<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Assonance<\/strong> \u2013 the repetition of vowel sounds in a sentence or passage.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Attention<\/strong> \u2013 focus on one stimulus while ignoring or suppressing reactions to other stimuli.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Attention getter<\/strong> \u2013 a statement or question that piques the audience\u2019s interest in what you have to say at the very beginning of a speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Attitude<\/strong> \u2013 a stable positive or negative response to a person, idea, object, or policy.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Audience Analysis<\/strong> \u2013 examining and looking at your audience first by its demographic characteristics and then by their internal psychological traits.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Bandwagon<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy that assumes that because something is popular, it is therefore good, correct, or desirable.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Bar graphs<\/strong> \u2013 a graph designed to show the differences between quantities.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Beliefs<\/strong> \u2013 statements we hold to be true.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Boolean search<\/strong> \u2013 a method of using search engines in databases and the Internet that allows the user to combine key terms or words with the \u201coperators\u201d AND, NOT, or OR to find more relevant results.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Bridging statement<\/strong> \u2013 a type of connective that emphasizes moving the audience psychologically to the next part of a speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Causal reasoning<\/strong> \u2013 a form of inductive reasoning that seeks to make cause-effect connections.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Central idea statement<\/strong> \u2013 a statement that contains or summarizes a speech\u2019s main points.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Channel<\/strong> \u2013 the means through which a message gets from sender to receiver.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Chart<\/strong> \u2013 a graphical representation of data (often numerical) or a sketch representing an ordered process.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Chronological pattern<\/strong> \u2013 an organizational pattern for speeches in which the main points are arranged in time order.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Clich\u00e9s<\/strong> \u2013 predictable and generally overused expressions; usually similes.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Clincher<\/strong> \u2013 something memorable with which to conclude your speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Cognitive dissonance<\/strong> \u2013 a psychological phenomenon where people confronted with conflicting information or viewpoints reach a state of dissonance (generally the disagreement between conflicting thoughts and\/or actions), which can be very uncomfortable, and results in actions to get rid of the dissonance and maintain consonance.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Communication<\/strong> - the sharing of meaning between two or more people<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Confirmation bias<\/strong> - a tendency to search for or interpret information in a way that confirms one\u2019s preconceptions; the seeking or interpreting of evidence in ways that are partial to existing beliefs.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Connective<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase or sentence that connects various parts of a speech and shows the relationship between them.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Connotative meaning<\/strong> \u2013 the subjective meaning a word evokes in people either collectively or individually.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Console<\/strong> \u2013 to offer comfort in a time of grief.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Construct<\/strong> - a tool used in psychology to facilitate understanding of human behavior; a label for a cluster of related but co-varying behaviors.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Culture<\/strong> - the system of learned and shared symbols, language, values, and norms that distinguish one group of people from another.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Decode<\/strong> \u2013 the process of the listener or receiver understanding the words and symbols of a message and making meaning of them.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Deductive reasoning<\/strong> \u2013 a type of reasoning in which a conclusion is based on the combination of multiple premises that are generally assumed to be true.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Defamatory speech<\/strong> \u2013 a false statement of fact that damages a person\u2019s character, fame, or reputation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Define<\/strong> \u2013 to set limits on what a word or term means, how the audience should think about it, and\/or how you will use it.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Demographic characteristics<\/strong> \u2013 the outward characteristics of the audience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Denotative meaning<\/strong> \u2013 the objective or literal meaning shared by most people using the word.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Derived credibility<\/strong> \u2013 a speaker\u2019s credibility and trustworthiness (as judged by the audience members) throughout the process of the speech, which also can range from point to point in the speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Diagrams<\/strong> \u2013 drawings or sketches that outline and explain the parts of an object, process, or phenomenon that cannot be readily seen.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Domain term<\/strong> \u2013 a section of the Internet that is made up of computers or sites that are related in some way (such as by use or source); examples include .com, .edu. .net, and .gov.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Encode<\/strong> \u2013 the process of the sender putting his\/her thoughts and feelings into words or other symbols.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Enthymeme<\/strong> \u2013 a syllogism with one of the premises missing.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Ethics<\/strong> \u2013 branch of philosophy that involves determinations of what is right and moral.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Ethnic identity<\/strong> \u2013 a group an individual identifies with based on a common culture.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Ethos<\/strong> \u2013 the influence of speaker credentials and character in a speech; arguments based on credibility.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Eulogy<\/strong> - a speech given in honor of someone who has died.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Euphemisms<\/strong> \u2013 language devices often used to make something unpleasant sound more tolerable.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Expert<\/strong> \u2013 someone with recognized credentials, knowledge, education, and\/or experience in a subject.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Extemporaneous speaking<\/strong> \u2013 the presentation of a carefully planned and rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">False analogy<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy where two things are compared that do not share enough (or key) similarities to be compared fairly.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">False cause<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy that assumes that because something happened first, that subsequent events are a result.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">False dilemma<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy that forces listeners to choose between two alternatives when more than two alternatives exist.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Feedback<\/strong> \u2013 direct or indirect messages sent from an audience (receivers) back to the original sender of a message.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Figurative analogy<\/strong> \u2013 an analogy where the two things under comparison are not essentially the same; \u201cMy love is like a red, red rose.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Figurative language<\/strong> \u2013 language that uses metaphors and similes to compare things that may not be literally alike.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">General purpose<\/strong> \u2013 the broad, overall goal of a speech; to inform, to persuade, to entertain, etc.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Generalization<\/strong> \u2013 a form of inductive reasoning that draws conclusions based on recurring patterns or repeated observations.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Graph<\/strong> \u2013 a pictorial representation of the relationships of quantitative data using dots, lines, bars, pie slices, and the like.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Guilt by Association<\/strong> - a form of false analogy based on the idea that if two things bear any relationship at all, they are comparable<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Gustatory<\/strong> \u2013 of or relating to the sense of taste.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Hasty generalization<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy that involves making a generalization with too few examples.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Hearing<\/strong> \u2013 the physical process in which sound waves hit the ear drums and send a message to the brain.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Hero speech<\/strong> \u2013 a motivational speech given by someone who is considered a hero in society.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Heterogeneous<\/strong> \u2013 a mixture of different types of people and demographic characteristics within a group of people.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Hypothetical narrative<\/strong> \u2013 a story of something that could happen but has not happened yet.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Homogeneous<\/strong> \u2013 a group of people who are very similar in many characteristics.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Hyperbole<\/strong> \u2013 intentional exaggeration for effect.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Imagery<\/strong> \u2013 language that makes the recipient smell, taste, see, hear, and feel a sensation; also known as sensory language.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Impromptu speaking<\/strong> \u2013 the presentation of a short message without advance preparation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Inductive reasoning<\/strong> \u2013 a type of reasoning\u00a0in which examples or specific instances are used to supply strong evidence for (though not absolute proof of) the truth of the conclusion; the scientific method.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Information literacy<\/strong> \u2013 the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use the needed information.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Irony<\/strong> \u2013 the expression of one\u2019s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Irrefutable<\/strong> \u2013 a statement or claim that cannot be argued.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Jargon<\/strong> \u2013 language used in a specific field that may or may not be understood by others.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Kinesthetic<\/strong> \u2013 issues related to the movement of the body or physical activity.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Lament<\/strong> \u2013 to express grief or sorrow.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Language<\/strong> \u2013 any formal system of gestures, signs, sounds, and symbols used or conceived as a means of communicating thought, either through written, enacted, or spoken means.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Lectern<\/strong> \u2013 a small raised surface, usually with a slanted top, where a speaker can place notes during a speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Line graph<\/strong> \u2013 a graph designed to show trends over time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Listening<\/strong> \u2013 an active process where you are specifically making an effort to understand, process, and retain information.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Literal analogy<\/strong> \u2013 an analogy where the two things under comparison have sufficient or significant similarities to be compared fairly.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Literal language<\/strong> \u2013 language that does not use comparisons like similes and metaphors.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Logical fallacies<\/strong> \u2013 mistakes in reasoning; erroneous conclusions or statements made from poor inductive or deductive analyses.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong memory.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Mental dialogue<\/strong> \u2013 an imagined conversation the speaker has with a given audience in which the speaker tries to anticipate what questions, concerns, or issues the audience may have to the subject under discussion.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Metaphor<\/strong> \u2013 a figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing for rhetorical effect, thus highlighting the similarities between the two.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Mode<\/strong> \u2013 the number that is the most frequently occurring within a given set of numbers.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Monotone<\/strong> \u2013 a continuing sound, especially of someone\u2019s voice, that is unchanging in pitch and without intonation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Motivational speech<\/strong> \u2013 a speech designed not only to make an audience experience emotional arousal but also to motivate the audience to do something with that emotional arousal.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Needs<\/strong> \u2013 important deficiencies that we are motivated to fulfill.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Noise<\/strong> \u2013 anything that disrupts, interrupts, or interferes with the communication process.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Non sequitur<\/strong> \u2013 a fallacy where the conclusion does not follow from its premise.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Olfactory<\/strong> \u2013 of or relating to the sense of smell.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Opinion<\/strong> \u2013 a personal view, attitude, or belief about something.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Organic<\/strong> \u2013 feelings or issues related to the inner-workings of the body.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Parallelism<\/strong> \u2013 the repetition of grammatical structures that correspond in sound, meter, and meaning.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Paraphrasing<\/strong> \u2013 putting the words and ideas of others into one\u2019s own authentic or personal language.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Pathos<\/strong> \u2013 the use of emotions such as anger, joy, hate, desire for community, and love to persuade the audience of the rightness of a proposition; arguments based on emotion.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Peer-reviewed<\/strong> \u2013 a review process in which other scholars have read a work of scholarly writing (an article, book, etc.) and judged it to be accurate according to the research rules of that discipline.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Peer testimony<\/strong> \u2013 any quotation from a friend, family member, or classmate about an incident or topic.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Perception<\/strong> \u2013 how people organize and interpret the patterns of stimuli around them.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Periodicals<\/strong> \u2013 works that are published on a regular, ongoing basis, such as magazines, academic journals, and newspapers.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Persuasion<\/strong> \u2013 a symbolic process in which communicators try to convince other people to change their attitudes or behavior regarding an issue through the transmission of a message, in an atmosphere of free choice.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Pictographs<\/strong> \u2013 a graph using iconic symbols to dramatize differences in amounts.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong man or woman\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Planned redundancy<\/strong> \u2013 the use of a clear central idea statement, preview of the main points, connective statements, and overall summary in the conclusion to reinforce the main ideas or points of a speech; the deliberate repetition of structural aspects of speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Post hoc ergo propter hoc (historical fallacy)<\/strong> - using progression in time as the reason for causation, but nothing else.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong class=\"calibre2\">Presentation aids<\/strong> \u2013 the resources beyond the speech itself that a speaker uses to enhance the message conveyed to the audience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"calibre1\"><strong
