14 What is a Bibliography?

What is a bibliography?

Generally, footnotes (or endnotes) have a corresponding entry in the bibliography. A bibliography:

  • is an alphabetized list, usually organized by the authors’ last names
  • is on a separate page at the end of your paper that lists all the bibliographic information for the sources used in your paper to support your research
  • is formatted with hanging indents (which is opposite to how the notes are formatted)

Example

The bibliographic entry for the book we saw on the previous page would be:

Nowell, Iris. Painters Eleven: The Wild Ones of Canadian Art. Vancouver, BC: Douglas & McIntyre, 2010.

What if there is no author? What if there are multiple authors? What if there is no date?

Whatever the situation, you still need to cite your source. Check out the Chicago Citation guide for answers to these and other questions, and if you need help, please ask us.
