18 Creating Citations for a Reference Book Entry

The Ws for the reference book entry (there are five slides)

The footnote for the reference article:

David French, "Passchendale, battle of, 1917," in The Oxford Companion to British History, ed. John Cannon and Robert Crowcroft, 2nd ed. (Oxford University Press, 2015), Credo Reference.

The citation for the Reference article (click image to see it bigger):

Bibliography citation for a reference book entry highlighted in different colours and labels for each W (who, what, where, when). Citation is: French, David. “Passchendale, battle of, 1917.” In The Oxford Companion to British History, edited by John Cannon and Robert Crowcroft. 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2015. Credo Reference.

The example above is an encyclopedia article in a library database.

  • Author: the entry has an individual author; as always, for the footnote write it as follows: first name(s) then last name followed by a comma; for the bibliography: the last name, then a comma, then the full first name(s) followed by a period .
  • Title: titles of reference entries are capitalized headline-style and placed in quotation marks. Note that the end quotation marks come after the comma or period respectively.
  • Location 1:
    • for the footnote start with the word ‘in’ followed by the title of the book in headline-style and in italics, followed by a comma, then the word ‘ed.’ and the name(s) of the editor(s) in first name/last name sequence. For editions other than first editions add the information after the editor information, separated by a comma (here it is 2nd ed.; otherwise skip this part). This is followed by the publisher and date information, which are placed in parenthesis, separated by a comma.
    • for the bibliography start with the word ‘In’ followed by the title of the book in headline-style and in italics, followed by a comma, then the words ‘edited by’ and the name(s) of the editor(s) in first name/last name sequence, followed by a period. Add edition information for editions other than first editions (here it is 2nd ed.; otherwise skip this part), and lastly the publisher of the book, followed by a comma.
  • Date: the publication year of the book. If no date is available supply an access date. Follow with a comma after the parenthesis in the footnote but with a period in the bibliography.
  • Location 2: in our example, this is the name of the database as the entry was retrieved from a KPU database, and the online book does not have a DOI.

Note: Well known reference books like the Canadian Oxford Dictionary or the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary are usually only put in Notes and publication information is often omitted.
