The COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), began with an outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The graph above tracks the number of cases in 2022 for different countries and the whole world.

Notice, as we consider this example, that there is a definite relationship between week and the number of cases. For any week we choose, we can determine the corresponding number of cases. In this chapter, we will explore these kinds of relationships and their properties.
