The aerobic metabolic pathway of conversion of nutrients to energy requires oxygen, for example:<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">C<sub>6<\/sub>H<sub>12<\/sub>O<sub>6<\/sub>\u00a0+ O<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0\u2192 CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0+\u00a0<sub>6<\/sub>H<sub>2<\/sub>O + energy as ATP<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">So, for each molecule of glucose that is converted to energy, a molecule of oxygen is needed. Because the cells require a continuous supply of ATP, the body, in turn, needs a constant intake of oxygen and method for removal of carbon dioxide.
