{"id":60,"date":"2021-07-27T19:16:48","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T19:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/accnursing2030\/chapter\/iii-glossary\/"},"modified":"2025-02-18T18:41:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T18:41:05","slug":"iii-glossary","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/accnursing2030\/chapter\/iii-glossary\/","title":{"raw":"III Glossary","rendered":"III Glossary"},"content":{"raw":"<strong>Accountability:<\/strong> Being answerable to oneself and others for one\u2019s own choices, decisions, and actions as measured against a standard.\n\n<strong>Assignment:<\/strong> Routine care, activities, and procedures that are within the authorized scope of practice of the RN, LPN\/VN, or routine functions of the assistive personnel.\n\n<strong>Closed-loop communication:<\/strong> A process that enables the person giving the instructions to hear what they said reflected back and to confirm that their message was, in fact, received correctly.\n\n<strong>Constructive feedback:<\/strong> Supportive feedback that offers solutions to areas of weakness.\n\n<strong>Delegated responsibility: <\/strong>A\u00a0nursing activity, skill, or procedure that is transferred from a license nurse to a delegatee.\n\n<strong>Delegatee:<\/strong> An RN, LPN\/VN, or AP who is delegated a nursing responsibility by either an APRN, RN, or LPN\/VN who is competent to perform the task and verbally accepts the responsibility.\n\n<strong>Delegation:<\/strong> Allowing a delegatee to perform a specific nursing activity, skill, or procedure that is beyond the delegatee\u2019s traditional role but in which they have received additional training.\n\n<strong>Delegator:<\/strong> An APRN, RN, or LPN\/VN who requests a specially trained delegatee to perform a specific nursing activity, skill, or procedure that is beyond the delegatee\u2019s traditional role.\n\n<strong>Five rights of delegation:<\/strong> Right task, right circumstance, right person, right directions and communication, and right supervision and evaluation.\n\n<strong>Nursing team members:<\/strong> Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), registered nurses (RN), licensed practical\/vocational nurses (LPN\/VN), and assistive personnel (AP).\n\n<strong>Scope of practice:<\/strong> Procedures, actions, and processes that a health care practitioner is permitted to undertake in keeping with the terms of their professional license.\n\n<strong>Supervision<\/strong>: Appropriate monitoring of the delegated activity, evaluation of patient outcomes, and follow-up with the delegatee at the completion of the activity.\n\n<strong>Titrate:<\/strong> Making adjustments to medication dosage per an established protocol to obtain a desired therapeutic outcome.\n\n<strong>Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP):<\/strong> Any assistive personnel trained to function in a supportive role, regardless of title, to whom a nursing responsibility may be delegated. This includes, but is not limited to, certified nursing assistants or aides (CNAs), patient-care technicians (PCTs), certified medical assistants (CMAs), certified medication aides, and home health aides.<sup>[footnote]American Nurses Association and NCSBN.
