Other social media platforms including Youtube and Whatsapp also have more than one billion users each.\r\n\r\nThese numbers are huge \u2013 there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/world-population-by-world-regions-post-1820\">7.7 billion people<\/a>\u00a0in the world, with at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/number-of-internet-users-by-country?tab=chart&amp;time=1990..2016&amp;country=OWID_WRL\">3.5 billion of us online<\/a>. This means social media platforms are used by one-in-three people in the world, and more than two-thirds of all internet users.\r\n\r\nSocial media has changed the world. The rapid and vast adoption of these technologies is changing how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/36\/17753\">find partners<\/a>, how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/12\/10\/social-media-outpaces-print-newspapers-in-the-u-s-as-a-news-source\/\">access information from the news<\/a>, and how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitterandteargas.org\/\">organize to demand political change<\/a>.\r\n\r\nWho uses social media? When did the rise of social media start and what are the largest sites today? Here we answer these and other key questions to understand social media use around the world.\r\n\r\nWe begin with an outline of key trends and conclude with a perspective on the rate of adoption of social media relative to other modern communication technologies.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cormorant Garamond', serif;font-size: 1.42425em;font-style: italic\">Social media started in the early 2000s<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\r\n\r\nThe first social media site to reach a million monthly active users was MySpace \u2013\u00a0it achieved this milestone around 2004. This is arguably the beginning of social media as we know it.<a id=\"ref-1\" class=\"ref\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/rise-of-social-media#note-1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\r\n\r\nIn the interactive chart below we plot monthly active users, by platform, since 2004. You can use the slider to focus on particular years, and you can click the \u2018+ Add\u2019 option to change series and track the evolution of other social media platforms.\r\n\r\nThis chart shows that there are some large social media sites that have been around for ten or more years, such as Facebook, YouTube and Reddit; but other large sites are much newer.\r\n\r\nTikTok, for example, launched in September 2016 and by mid-2018 it had already reached half a billion users. To put this in perspective: TikTok gained on average about 20 million new users per month over this period.\r\n\r\nThe data also shows rapid changes in the opposite direction. Once-dominant platforms have disappeared. In 2008, Hi5, MySpace and Friendster were close competitors to Facebook, yet by 2012 they had virtually no share of the market. The case of MySpace is remarkable considering that in 2006 it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2006\/07\/11\/myspace-americas-number-one\/\">temporarily surpassed Google<\/a>\u00a0as the most visited website in the US.\r\n\r\nMost of the social media platforms that survived the last decade have shifted significantly in what they offer users. Twitter, for example, didn\u2019t allow users to upload videos or images in the beginning. YouTube, Instagram and WeChat follow, with more than a billion users. But some platforms are much more popular among younger people. This is shown in the chart where we plot the breakdown of social media use by age groups in the US.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"wp-image-24821 lightbox-enabled\" src=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Use-of-social-media-by-age-v2-800x455.png\" alt=\"Use of social media by age v2\" width=\"800\" height=\"455\" data-high-res-src=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Use-of-social-media-by-age-v2.png\" \/>For Snapchat and Instagram the \u2018age gradient\u2019 is extremely steep \u2013 the popularity of these platforms drops much faster with age. The majority of people under 25 use Snapchat (73%), while only 3% of people over 65 use it.\r\n\r\nSince these platforms are relatively new, it\u2019s hard to know how much of this age gradient is the result of a \u201ccohort effect\u201d. In other words: it\u2019s unclear whether today\u2019s young people will continue using Snapchat as they become older. If they do, the age gradient would narrow.\r\n\r\nLet\u2019s now look at gender differences.\r\n\r\nIn this other chart we show the percentage of men and women who use different platforms in the US. The diagonal line marks parity;\u00a0 so sites above the diagonal line are those more popular among men and sites below are those more popular among women. The share of women who use Pinterest is more than twice as high as the share of men using this platform. For Reddit it is the other way around, the share of men is almost twice as high.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\r\n<h4 id=\"in-rich-countries-almost-all-young-people-use-social-media\">In rich countries almost all young people use social media<\/h4>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\r\n\r\nFrom a back-of-the-envelope calculation we know that, if Facebook has 2.3 billion users, then at least 30% of the world uses social media.<a id=\"ref-2\" class=\"ref\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/rise-of-social-media#note-2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0This is of course just an average \u2013 for some world regions, and specifically for some population groups, usage rates are much higher.\r\n\r\nYoung people tend to use social media more frequently. In fact, in rich countries, where access to the internet is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/share-of-individuals-using-the-internet\">nearly universal<\/a>, the vast majority of young adults use it.\r\n\r\nOur chart here shows the proportion of people aged 16 to 24 who use social networks across a selection of countries. All data includes both home &amp; work usage for people 18+.[\/caption]\r\n\r\nAccording to a survey from the Pew Research Center, adults aged 18 to 29 in the US are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/12\/10\/social-media-outpaces-print-newspapers-in-the-u-s-as-a-news-source\/\">more likely<\/a>\u00a0to get news indirectly via social media than directly from print newspapers or news sites; and they also report being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/07\/25\/americans-going-online-almost-constantly\/\">online \u2018almost constantly\u2019<\/a>.<a id=\"ref-4\" class=\"ref\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/rise-of-social-media#note-4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\r\n\r\nThere is evidence that in other rich countries people also spend many hours per day online. The next chart shows the number of hours young people spend on the internet across a selection of rich countries. Even on a global stage the speed of diffusion is striking: Facebook surged from covering around 1.5% of the world population in 2008, to around 30% in 2018.<a id=\"ref-5\" class=\"ref\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/rise-of-social-media#note-5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\r\n\r\nHow does this compare to the diffusion of other communication technologies that make part of our everyday life today?\r\n\r\nThe following chart provides some perspective.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_568\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"300\"]<img class=\"size-medium wp-image-568\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/accintrotomedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2022\/08\/technology-adoption-by-households-in-the-united-states-300x212.png\" alt=\"Chart of Increased Household Technology\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/> Share of US households using specific technologies, 1930 to 2019[\/caption]\r\n\r\nSocial media\u2019s growth in the US is comparable \u2013 in speed and to some extent also in reach \u2013 to that of most modern communication-enabling technologies, including computers, smartphones and the internet.\r\n\r\nThe rise of social media is an extraordinary example of how quickly and drastically social behaviours can change: Something that is today part of the everyday life of one-third of the world population, was unthinkable less than a generation ago.\r\n\r\nFast changes like those brought about by social media always spark fears about possible negative effects. Specifically in the context of social media, a key question is whether these new communication technologies are having a negative impact on our mental health \u2013 this is an important question and we cover the evidence at Our World in Data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/social-media-wellbeing\">here<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\r\n<footer class=\"article-footer\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\r\n<h3 id=\"endnotes\">Endnotes<\/h3>\r\n<ol class=\"endnotes\">\r\n \t<li id=\"note-1\">\u00a0There were of course earlier, much smaller predecessors of social networking website. Probably the first recognizable social media site, in the format we know today, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SixDegrees.com\">Six Degrees<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a platform created in 1997 that enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. At the core, the features that define a social media platform are (i) profiles for users, (ii) ability for users to constantly upload content, and (iii) ability for users to discuss content and connect with other users.<\/li>\r\n \t<li id=\"note-2\">\u00a0To be precise, Facebook has 2.3 billion \u2018active users\u2019. It\u2019s possible that there are some discrepancies between the number of \u2018active users\u2019 and the number of people, since one person could in theory maintain multiple accounts. In practice, these discrepancies are likely small because most social media platforms, including Facebook, have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/975828035803295\">policies and checks<\/a>\u00a0to avoid multiple accounts per person.<\/li>\r\n \t<li id=\"note-3\">\u00a0Digital media contrasts with print media (including books, newspapers and magazines) and other traditional or analog media (including TV, movies and radio).<\/li>\r\n \t<li id=\"note-4\">\u00a0According to the survey from Pew Research, 36% of adults 18 to 29 in the US say they \u2018often get news via social media\u2019, which is higher than the share saying they \u2018often get news via other platforms\u2019, such as news sites, TV, radio or print newspapers. From the same survey we also know that 48% of adults 18 to 29\u00a0say they go online almost constantly, and 46% say they go online multiple times per day.<\/li>\r\n \t<li id=\"note-5\">\u00a0The data for social media adoption in the US is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/technology-adoption-by-households-in-the-united-states?time=2005..2019&amp;country=Social%20media%20usage\">here<\/a>. Other social media platforms including Youtube and Whatsapp also have more than one billion users each.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers are huge \u2013 there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/world-population-by-world-regions-post-1820\">7.7 billion people<\/a>\u00a0in the world, with at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/number-of-internet-users-by-country?tab=chart&amp;time=1990..2016&amp;country=OWID_WRL\">3.5 billion of us online<\/a>. This means social media platforms are used by one-in-three people in the world, and more than two-thirds of all internet users.<\/p>\n<p>Social media has changed the world. The rapid and vast adoption of these technologies is changing how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/36\/17753\">find partners<\/a>, how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/12\/10\/social-media-outpaces-print-newspapers-in-the-u-s-as-a-news-source\/\">access information from the news<\/a>, and how we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitterandteargas.org\/\">organize to demand political change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Who uses social media? When did the rise of social media start and what are the largest sites today? Here we answer these and other key questions to understand social media use around the world.<\/p>\n<p>We begin with an outline of key trends and conclude with a perspective on the rate of adoption of social media relative to other modern communication technologies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cormorant Garamond', serif;font-size: 1.42425em;font-style: italic\">Social media started in the early 2000s<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-sticky-right\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p>The first social media site to reach a million monthly active users was MySpace \u2013\u00a0it achieved this milestone around 2004. This is arguably the beginning of social media as we know it.<a id=\"ref-1\" class=\"ref\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/rise-of-social-media#note-1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the interactive chart below we plot monthly active users, by platform, since 2004. You can use the slider to focus on particular years, and you can click the \u2018+ Add\u2019 option to change series and track the evolution of other social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>This chart shows that there are some large social media sites that have been around for ten or more years, such as Facebook, YouTube and Reddit; but other large sites are much newer.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok, for example, launched in September 2016 and by mid-2018 it had already reached half a billion users. To put this in perspective: TikTok gained on average about 20 million new users per month over this period.<\/p>\n<p>The data also shows rapid changes in the opposite direction. Once-dominant platforms have disappeared. In 2008, Hi5, MySpace and Friendster were close competitors to Facebook, yet by 2012 they had virtually no share of the market. The case of MySpace is remarkable considering that in 2006 it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2006\/07\/11\/myspace-americas-number-one\/\">temporarily surpassed Google<\/a>\u00a0as the most visited website in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the social media platforms that survived the last decade have shifted significantly in what they offer users. Twitter, for example, didn\u2019t allow users to upload videos or images in the beginning. But some platforms are much more popular among younger people. This is shown in the chart where we plot the breakdown of social media use by age groups in the US.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24821 lightbox-enabled\" src=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Use-of-social-media-by-age-v2-800x455.png\" alt=\"Use of social media by age v2\" width=\"800\" height=\"455\" data-high-res-src=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Use-of-social-media-by-age-v2.png\" \/>For Snapchat and Instagram the \u2018age gradient\u2019 is extremely steep \u2013 the popularity of these platforms drops much faster with age. The majority of people under 25 use Snapchat (73%), while only 3% of people over 65 use it.<\/p>\n<p>Since these platforms are relatively new, it\u2019s hard to know how much of this age gradient is the result of a \u201ccohort effect\u201d. In other words: it\u2019s unclear whether today\u2019s young people will continue using Snapchat as they become older. If they do, the age gradient would narrow.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s now look at gender differences.<\/p>\n<p>In this other chart we show the percentage of men and women who use different platforms in the US. In fact, in rich countries, where access to the internet is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/share-of-individuals-using-the-internet\">nearly universal<\/a>, the vast majority of young adults use it.<\/p>\n<p>Our chart here shows the proportion of people aged 16 to 24 who use social networks across a selection of countries. At the core, the features that define a social media platform are (i) profiles for users, (ii) ability for users to constantly upload content, and (iii) ability for users to discuss content and connect with other users.<\/li>\n<li id=\"note-2\">\u00a0To be precise, Facebook has 2.3 billion \u2018active users\u2019. It\u2019s possible that there are some discrepancies between the number of \u2018active users\u2019 and the number of people, since one person could in theory maintain multiple accounts. In practice, these discrepancies are likely small because most social media platforms, including Facebook, have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/975828035803295\">policies and checks<\/a>\u00a0to avoid multiple accounts per person.<\/li>\n<li id=\"note-3\">\u00a0Digital media contrasts with print media (including books, newspapers and magazines) and other traditional or analog media (including TV, movies and radio).<\/li>\n<li id=\"note-4\">\u00a0According to the survey from Pew Research, 36% of adults 18 to 29 in the US say they \u2018often get news via social media\u2019, which is higher than the share saying they \u2018often get news via other platforms\u2019, such as news sites, TV, radio or print newspapers. From the same survey we also know that 48% of adults 18 to 29\u00a0say they go online almost constantly, and 46% say they go online multiple times per day.<\/li>\n<li id=\"note-5\">\u00a0The data for social media adoption in the US is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/technology-adoption-by-households-in-the-united-states?time=2005..2019&amp;country=Social%20media%20usage\">here<\/a>.
