This chapter focuses on the <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"264\"]pre-writing[\/pb_glossary]\u00a0<\/strong>phase, which is when you should be gathering information and content to help generate those materials.\u00a0 In this chapter, you will find a potential job that you are eligible to apply for now, conduct a <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"265\"]self-inventory[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> of your skills and achievements, research your potential employer, and research the job you have selected. This may seem like a lot of work, but following these steps will increase your chances of standing out from the other applicants.\r\n<h2>Finding a Job<\/h2>\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_75\" align=\"alignright\" width=\"344\"]<img class=\"wp-image-75\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/ppsccom2250organizationalcommunication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/231\/2021\/02\/photo-1432888498266-38ffec3eaf0a-300x199.png\" alt=\"Looking down from above, you see a person planning with paper and highlighters in front of a computer screen. \" width=\"344\" height=\"228\" \/> Photo #1: Making a plan by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@firmbee\">Firmbee\u00a0<\/a>on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/job-interview?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nFinding a suitable job opening can be a time-consuming process. \u00a0Here are a few resources to get you started:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Job boards<\/span>: Search for jobs in your field by browsing sites like<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Indeed<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.careerbuilder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CareerBuilder<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glassdoor,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monster.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monster<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Specialty job lists<\/span><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>look for lists of jobs in specific industries such as agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/about-usda\/working-usda\/careers\">U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/a>), nonprofits (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idealist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idealist<\/a>), or media (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MediaBistro<\/a>)<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Company, organization, and government websites<\/span>: visit the employment section on websites of companies you admire; search federal, provincial, regional, and city websites for job postings.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Your network<\/span>: talk to classmates, friends, past employers, and professors, or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>\u00a0to search for openings at companies in your network.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Your college<strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0Visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pikespeak.edu\/student-support\/career-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your college website and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pikespeak.edu\/student-support\/career-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career services,<\/a> and attend job fairs hosted at your college.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nOnce you have found a job, print and\/or save a copy of the job posting or description. This document will help you tailor your <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/2250organizationalcommunication\/chapter\/cover-letters\/\">application<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/2250organizationalcommunication\/chapter\/writing-the-resume\/\">materials<\/a> and\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/2250organizationalcommunication\/chapter\/interview-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview preparation<\/a><\/span>. Companies often delete job postings once they have received sufficient applicants, so you must save your copy.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Exercise #1: Finding a Job Posting<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nOne of your assignments for this course is to apply the rhetorical theory you are learning to the job application process.\r\n\r\nFor this assignment, you will create a [pb_glossary id=\"263\"]<strong>job package<\/strong>[\/pb_glossary] for a position you are qualified to apply for. The exercises in this chapter will get you started.\r\n\r\nLet's begin by actually finding some potential jobs! Use the website options listed above to identify a few positions for which you are qualified. Looking for internships in your field is a great place to start.\r\n\r\nAfter gathering a few job postings, pick one you are most excited about. You will use this one for the <strong>job package<\/strong> assignment and the other exercises in this chapter.\r\n\r\nRemember to print or save a copy of your chosen job posting. Once the posting is ready, proceed to the next section.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Conducting a Self-Inventory<\/h2>\r\nKnowing what you have to offer as a potential employee is essential. As you work on your [pb_glossary id=\"268\"]<strong>r\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/strong>[\/pb_glossary], you may worry that you have nothing valuable to include, or you may fear that you are \u201cbragging.\u201d One way to get over these hurdles is to allocate time to a <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"265\"]self-inventory[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>. Brainstorm your skills, accomplishments, and knowledge by asking yourself the following questions:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What did you accomplish at a past or current work, school, or volunteer position?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What transferable skills have you learned?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What would you tell a friend or family member you were proud of achieving there?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nStart writing down skills and <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"266\"]action verbs[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> that describe your experiences and accomplishments, and don\u2019t worry about putting them into a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 format yet.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Exercise #2: Self-Inventory<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nLet's take a moment to brainstorm some skills and <strong>action verbs<\/strong> that you can use in your <strong>job package<\/strong>\u00a0assignment for this course. The best way to do this is to browse a skill list like the one below.\r\n\r\nComplete the following steps:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Scan the groupings of skills (Communication Skills, Creative Skills, Financial Skills, etc.) for <b>action verbs <\/b>related to your skills or work.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Write down the categories of\u00a0<strong>skills<\/strong> you have (again, Communication Skills, Creative Skills, Financial Skills, etc.) and the action verbs that describe your skills or work (e.g., analyzed, performed, calculated, advocated, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nFor example, you have probably already done several team projects in school. Gather dates of employment, training, lists of activities you have been involved in, academic awards, achievements, and special projects. Of course, to know your audience means you will need to take the time to conduct some research first. You must research your potential employer and the job you\u2019re applying for. The easiest way to study a potential employer is to visit the company\u2019s website. Look for an \u201cAbout Us\u201d page or a \u201cMission Statement,\u201d and observe how the company describes its goals and values. Try to answer the following questions about the company or organization:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Who does this company serve?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Who are this company\u2019s partners or competitors?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What technologies would I use at this company?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What is the tone of this company\u2019s materials (formal, conservative, humorous, \u201ccutting edge,\u201d etc.)?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How would you describe this company\u2019s brand?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nHere are a few more ways to research a company: search for its name on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> and other social media sites, browse for news articles about the company or press releases written by the company, speak with friends or colleagues who work for the company, or call the company to request an informational interview. This may seem like extra work, but this research can help you analyze the needs of your <strong>rhetorical audience <\/strong>and, as a result, better market yourself as a solution to those needs. As you research, look for ways to connect with the company:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What do you admire about the company?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Where do your values and interests overlap with those of the company?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What makes this company a good fit for you?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nTry to summarize your connection to the company in one sentence. Remember that your potential employer is also your <strong>rhetorical audience<\/strong>, and adapt your tone, examples, and level of technicality accordingly.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Exercise #3: Research the Employer<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nIt's time to research the company to which you are applying!\r\n\r\nUsing the company from your job posting, find the company's \"About Us\" and\/or \"Mission Statement\" page and try to answer the questions listed above.\u00a0 You may need to look at other parts of the website or online to find some answers. The job posting is also a great place to find this info.\r\n\r\nOnce you have your answers, summarize your connection to the company in one sentence. What about this company makes you want to work for them? What part of their goals and\/or values do you most respond to? A sentence that explains this information would be great for the first paragraph of your [pb_glossary id=\"267\"]<strong>cover letter<\/strong>[\/pb_glossary]!\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Researching the Potential Job<\/h2>\r\nTo research the job itself, take advantage of the job posting you found. The job posting is your secret weapon; in this document, you are told what the employer is looking for in a candidate.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Exercise #4: Researching the Job<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nThe job posting will give you insight into the [pb_glossary id=\"216\"]<strong>rhetorical exigence<\/strong>[\/pb_glossary] that a company needs to solve. The solution is you! The best way to figure out how to solve that problem is by scouring the job posting and making connections to its words.\r\n\r\nYou want to get into a conversation with the document as you review it, so you will need a way to annotate it. Please print or copy and paste it into a document editor like Microsoft Word. Once you have the document ready, take the following steps:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Highlight or underline your qualifications\u2014skills, technologies you\u2019ve used, etc.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Note any past achievements related to any of the preferred qualifications. Ideally, try to use the achievements and experiences you generated from Exercise #2. For example, if the job description seeks a candidate who can diagnose and solve technical problems, write down an example of a specific time in which you did so in a professional or academic setting.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Circle any [pb_glossary id=\"261\"]<strong>keywords<\/strong> [\/pb_glossary] you might use in your materials. Using the same terms as a potential employer demonstrates to that employer that you can \u201cspeak their language.\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Note any questions\/uncertainties and any qualifications you do not have to decide what to highlight and what to downplay in your materials (as well as what you need to learn more about).<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nAny content you find through this process can be discussed in your application materials. You may not end up using all of the content you generate, but it's essential to have options when trying to appeal to your [pb_glossary id=\"217\"]<strong>rhetorical audience<\/strong>[\/pb_glossary]\u2014the company.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Creating a word cloud from the job description might help if you're having trouble identifying keywords<\/span>. This can be accomplished by using a website like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwordle.net\/\">EdWordle<\/a>. Word clouds present text as a visual display, reorganizing content so that the largest words appear most frequently in the analyzed text(see Figures 1 and 2 below). A word cloud can be a helpful visual tool to identify <strong>keywords<\/strong> to use in your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and cover letter. You might also be surprised to find that a \u201cbig word\u201d (a commonly repeated <strong>keyword<\/strong>) is one that you would not automatically associate with the job. For example, Figure 1 below is generated from a job posting for a Children's Museum Experience Facilitator position. What words stand out to you?\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_77\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"551\"]<img class=\"wp-image-77\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.ccconline.org\/ppsccom2250organizationalcommunication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/231\/2025\/03\/word-cloud.png\" alt=\"Word Cloud Example\" width=\"551\" height=\"347\" \/> Figure 11.2.1 Portland Children\u2019s Museum Experience Facilitator Job Description as a Word Cloud[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nWe can see in Figure 11.2.1 that some of the words are apparent terms we would expect to find in a children\u2019s museum job description\u2014museum, children, exhibits, playing, etc. However, \"diversity\u201d and \u201cdiverse\u201d are also large terms. If you were applying for this job, you would now know to discuss your commitment to diversity and experience working with people from diverse backgrounds. Now you try. Figure 2, below, is a word cloud generated from a job posting <span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">by Nutrien for a summer student position targeting\u00a0<strong>mechanical engineers<\/strong><\/span>. However, there are a few\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">key words<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\"> we can extract from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this: words like communication, inclusion, analysis, and organization. Please print or copy and paste it into a document editor like Microsoft Word.
